Dear Peace Families,
As I mentioned last week in this newsletter, in Lent we follow Jesus on this 40 day journey to the cross and beyond. During the season, many Christians have traditionally given up something—things like coffee or desserts—sacrificing something they love for 40 days, acknowledging that Jesus sacrificed even more for us. And over the next several weeks, I’ll offer suggestions for things we might give up—though there won’t be anything tangible mentioned.
This week, I encourage you to give up comparison.
Many have said that comparison is the thief of joy–and they’re correct. When we compare ourselves to others, our focus turns to what other people can do, instead of who we are. And in doing so, we lose site of our own significance, achievements, and self-worth.
You might have just gotten a PR in your latest run, but you’re still not as fast as some of your friends. You might have done well on a test, but didn’t get the highest score in the class. You might have nailed that presentation at work, but your coworker got a promotion before you. You love your family, but they seem somewhat boring when you see other families and friends on social media.
Comparison is a thief of joy because it steals our ability to acknowledge our blessings that God has given us right here, right now. It steals our ability to stay present in the moment and enjoy it. It steals our ability to embrace who we are—an amazing child of God.
So this week, and this Lent, let’s give up comparison, so that we can be present, joyful, and confident in who God has created us to be.
Grace and Peace,
Joe
