CYF Blast October 17, 2024

Dear Families and Friends of Peace,

Last week, I was invited to speak with the retired principals of the Minnesota Elementary School Principals Association (MESPA) on the subject of teen mental health. Having served for decades in public school systems, this group of principals shared my concern and care for students and their wellbeing.

There are many biological (genetic), psychological (chemical imbalances in the brain), and environmental (experiences of trauma) factors that can cause mental health issues. In fact, 1/5 teens have a diagnosable mental health disorder—such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and addictive behaviors—but around 80% don’t receive treatment.

So as families, I want to put you in the best position to care for your children and their needs. Here are five actions steps you can take as parents:

  1. Normalize conversations about mental health with your kids, and ask them who they can talk to (besides you) when they feel overwhelmed.
  2. Identify trusted adults, and make sure they have their contact information.
  3. Discern strategies with your kids for managing their mental health symptoms.
  4. Know who your kid’s friends are—and who their parents are.
  5. Reassure your students (verbally and with your actions) that you are here to support them, always.

There is no perfect solution, but together, we can do our best to support our students and one another.

Grace and Peace,

Joe
