Dear Peace Members and Friends,
In 1966, Minnesota musician Bob Dylan in an interview reported that he had “done everything I wanted to do.” “So, to what do you have to look forward?” Dylan responded: “Salvation. Just plain salvation.” When the interviewer pressed him further about what he meant by “salvation,” Dylan said, “I’d also like to start a cookbook magazine….I want to referee a heavyweight championship fight.”
I’m not sure if Dylan’s answer was tongue-in-cheek (I suspect so!), but nevertheless, his response begs the questions: what do Christians mean when we say the word, “salvation”? How do Lutheran Christians answer when asked, “Are you saved?” After all, we believe, along with all the New Testament writers, that “Jesus saves.”
This Sunday in worship, we’ll look at these questions as continue our sermon series, “Jesus Rediscovered.” After these last two weeks of “Jesus as Friend,” and “Jesus as Teacher,” we will turn to “Jesus as Savior.” The Peace Choir will be with us. A wonderful group of youth will be recognized and celebrated for completing their Communion class, and we will share in that Lord’s Supper. A good Sunday ahead!
In the Education Hour (10:45), there will be a preview of next week’s Annual Congregational Meeting. The written annual report will be available, 2022 financials will be reported and the proposed 2023 budget for ministry will be presented. We pastors will present our reports and questions and comments will be invited and discussed.
A reminder that the Annual Congregational Meeting of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church will then be a week from Sunday, January 29th, at 10:45am. At that meeting, both a proposed budget for 2023 will be discussed and new Council members will be voted upon, Church Council President Scott Moe will make his report and other church ministry and business discussed. All members of Peace are encouraged to attend!
Another reminder: the funeral service for Evan Hansen will be held on Thursday, January 26th at 5:00pm. All are welcome.
Last of all, I make a plea on behalf of VEAP, our local food-shelf. They are in great need of infant diapers of all sizes. There is a “VEAP” bin in the Narthex! Thank you for your support!
See you Sunday!
Mark
