March 14, 2025

Dear Peace Members and Friends,    It was really fun to see so many of you turn out for Wednesday night’s midweek Lenten activities; dinner, Holden Evening Prayer; rehearsal for the Peace Choir and Confirmation students gathered. A good night and so good to see you all!
Lent continues with worship on Sunday (9:30am). It is the Second Sunday in Lent and our Gospel reading describes one of the most memorable scenes in all the Gospels; Jesus weeping over Jerusalem. There will be a children’s message, the Peace Choir will sing, we’ll celebrate Holy Communion, and I’ll have a message, “Chickens and Foxes.”
In the Adult Education Hour (10:45am), we welcome Gracia Grindal, Professor Emeritus, Rhetoric from Luther Seminary who will present about 500 years of Lutheran hymns and hymnals. Gracia has published many articles on hymnody and the writing of hymns and hymnwriters, especially the history of Scandinavian-American Lutheran hymnody. In 2011 her collection of Scandinavian hymns in English, Hymns and Songs of the North: Nordic Christians Sing their Faith, came out, which included some 150 Nordic hymns many of which were translated by her. In addition, her hymns and hymn translations are published in hymnals of several mainline churches, including Episcopalian, Lutheran, Mennonite, Methodist, Presbyterian, and our current Lutheran hymnal. Helping out will be our own, Bruce Hudson. A stimulating hour ahead!
This year’s congregational Lenten service project selected by the Service & Mission Committee will be “Diapers and Dollars.” At VEAP, one of the big needs for the underserved are diapers for those of all ages. We can assist in VEAP’s ministry by bringing diapers (children’s and adult diapers) to church. You can also donate caseh toward this effort. If so, you can write a check (please write it to either “Peace Lutheran Church” with “Diaper Drive” in the memo line or write a check directly to VEAP). Checks can be placed in the offering plate or in the display diaper box. Diapers, money, or both, this is an opportunity for us to make a difference in our own community!
See you Sunday!
